It is the ego’s job to meet the needs of the id, while taking into consideration the reality of the situation.
The Ego and the ID is one of Freud's most insightful work into the subconscious. Although Freud did not invent the idea of the subconscious, he did play a major role in popularizing it. It was an important breakthrough in treating mental conditions.

The Ego and the Id ranks high among the works of Freud's later years. The heart of his concern is the ego, which he sees battling with three forces: the id, the super-ego, and the outside world.

His view of the unconscious was confusing and muddled sometimes, and it takes a good scholar to explain the distinctions and some of the definitional changes that Freud seemed to make arbitrarily throughout his career. The entire history of 19th Century can be written through the biography of three revolutionary thinkers- Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, sigmund Freud. Freud has changed our understanding of human behavior, using analogies based on jokes, philosophy of Sophocles and Shakespeare's Macbeth. His theories have been influencing literary fields to this day. For me, it is hard to name any Woody Allen film without Freudian reference, such is influence of Freud on cinema.

The Ego and the Id is the product of Freud's clinical work and thinking about the structure of the Psyche. A theme of the books is the way the largely unconscious and primal Id (or 'It') conflicts with the Superego (or 'Ego Ideal'), and how the Ego attempts to mediate between them.

Recommends it for: those interested in psychoanalysis/philosophy, and those who plan to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion
My first try on Freud. It's a quick read and more accessible than I thought it would be.
For those who are not a stranger to psychoanalysis but haven't read any of Freud, this might be a good starting point.

I’m new to Freud.
I’m learning as I go.
So please take all of this with a grain of salt.
That being said. I have been deep diving on the topic of psychoanalysis lately.
My experience with Freud’s work, and with the worldview it engenders has been very life affirming and rewarding.
In fact.
I’m somewhat of a convert.
This is particularly surprising to me, considering the fact that I previously held a lot of contempt for Freud and psychodynamic modalities in general.

They say 'Most of all people humiliated Darwin, Nietzsche and Freud. Darwin said that man originated from the monkey and the animal itself. Nietzsche said that person is only a step on the road to the superhuman. And Freud said that a person can only think about sex '- but since we are so humiliating, maybe we agree with this, we just do not want to admit ourselves? My lovely Freud, once someone asked me, 'Do you love Freud? How can someone like a person whose whole theory is repeated on sex? '-...more

A Very short book that Freud wrote later in his career after 'beyond the pleasure' principle where Freud had come up with the death drive next to his earlier libido. In this work, he explores the relation of id and ego and his idea of cathexis of in therapy to use things in the unconscious namely the id to bring to light to the ego to have the patient improve their condition. Freud's id, ego, and superego are part of common parlance today. None of this stuff is very well grounded and Popper thou...more

Underwhelmed, Freud's more abstract and speculative ideas here. Categories are not reduced or firmly bound as normal so it is hard to work with.
Main ideas:
-Three states: conscious, unconscious (actively repressed), preconscious (not actively repressed).
-All perceptions are either from without (sense-perceptions) or within (feelings or sensations) and are conscious.

I write tentatively upon The Ego and the Id, for Sigmund Freud possesses an incredible mind, arguably not attainable through any first attempt. My interpretations based on the theories and contents discussed within this book will remain, to a degree, vacant of any concise comprehension (for the time being). That withstanding, it is my interpretation that Freud poses a much broader question, (one ultimately disparate from the thinly pop culture, blasé psych-101 interpretations of Freud's sexual o...more

These awkward moments, when you get these awkward feelings, when you have these awkward revelations about things you do for all your life and you can't name or theorize..

A wonderful read, for the first time Freudian readers, you must know that Freud's theory are not static, he has changed a lot of them.

I didn't expect while reading this book to figure how genius Destovesky is ! One chapter was like reading Freud's commentary on Destovesky's novel Crime and Punishment, or in another way, I couldn't understand some Freud's theories without having in mind Destovesky's story. I also used to think Freud a strict man; this book showed me exactly the opposite. Only a small part of this book was very theoretical and utterly without a practical or historical proof

You were some crazy cokehead and thats why we love you. Fact is maybe most people dont work this way, what Freud did was provide a simplistic USABLE framework for laypeople to discuss mental health. He provided terminology and insight that allowed people to develop their own understanding of self. Right is irrelevant. My boy made waves.

Not sure I was able to fully absorb this one. Less than 100 pages and yet I felt a bit like I was walking through a fog that was only apparent when I was trying to see through it, but wasn't immediately visible when I was trying to look right at it. Thinking comprehension could be improved by reading other supporting material like his essay on Narcissism, etc. Will most likely come back and read this again after a bit.
Before reading Freud it's always good to know where he's coming from but if you are open to accepting things that initially seem bizzarre then Freud is for you. Though certain aspects of his theories were far fetched, most of Freudian views are the basis of all psychological theory.
Okay, so with Freud, you're always gonna nessecarily be reading him against his most classic work, Civilization and its Discontents, and in that light The Ego and the Id can be seen as a good supplementary to that book. I would still say Civ and Discontents is a better overall book just because it brings in all of Freud's major concepts together in an engaging way, but this book is required reading if only to get a decent understanding of Freud's Id-Ego-Super-Ego typology and how it relates to a...more

wacky, but not as wacky as Beyond the Pleasure Principle. feel like I have a better grasp of many concepts, ego id superego unconscious etc. I mean he still a confused ass hole tho but I like the book
Man, Freud has the uncanny ability to make me feel really stupid. I mean its the translated version and I still can't understand his sentances. I gave this three stars not because it was a good read, or because it was fun and interesting - it was actually dry and booring as hell - but because of it's importance to the psychological understanding of the human being. I like what he has to say - I disagree with alot of it, but I do think he was on to something - it's a pity Freud and Jung had such...more

Three stars because it's important to larger conversations, but... I'm looking at this stuff again and remembering why I got so annoyed with it.
Reductive synopsis: The male model is the norm (even anatomically); the female departs from it. The penis is the premise -- the given -- the phallus upon which arguments are made and conclusions drawn. If a woman gives birth to a baby, the child is only a symbolic substitute for the penis and the phallus (the power that comes from having the penis).

Nothing else defines the psyche in a better logical manner. Lets one take the crap out of 'reality' and define it for his-self in a more sublime manner. To each his own. Do disagree with the Oedipus Complex, not in entirety, but in certain extreme rationalizations Freud makes in linking it to the formation of the ego.

Famed neurologist, Sigmund Freud, had his paper, The Ego and the Id, first published in 1923. At the time, Freud was at the forefront of understanding the human mind, as the inventor of psychoanalysis. His reputation and new ways of thinking made The Ego and the Id very impactful. In this paper, Freud explains his theories on the unconscious as a whole with focus on the id, the ego, and the super-ego. While the paper was certainly fascinating, I would only recommend it for those who have a stron...more
I almost don't even feel qualified to give this review. This was my first attempt at reading dense psychology literature and I'm fairly confident a good chunk of what Freud was trying to convey went over my head. I don't recommend reading this book in isolation, as I did, without any background on Freud or a study group to discuss uncertainties or guiding resource. There is a lot of jargon and expectation of a familiarity with Freud's previous work.

It seems to me that the more complex Freud is, the more interesting his theories become. I first encountered, like many others, the concepts of the 'Ego and the Id' in High School English class where we read Oedipus the King. I already expected it, but I never realised how different and more complicated the actual book would be. Had I not read his introductory lectures prior to this I would've been completed lost.

This is the first time I've wished I'd read the the introduction before the rest of the book - this book was short but it was a slog, in part due to some curiosities in Freud's changes in terminology - and these changes were fairly well explained in the Editor's Introduction by Strachey in my edition. I've had a lot more enjoyment from some other Freud books, but this was compelling in its own convoluted way, and it seems to be one of the more important books in terms of becoming an educated cit...more

Freud's theory of the Id, Ego, and Superego is, I believe, one of his greatest contributions to the field of psychology. Unfortunately Freud's writing is so bad that it made reading this classic quite unbearable and has left me with no choice but to rate it as a four star book. For those interested solely in learning about his theory, I strongly recommend reading this (as well as another one of his books called The Interpretation of Dreams, but for anyone who is just curious and not dedicated to...more
First of all, this is a very esoteric book. Both the language and complexity of the concepts as well as references to previous literature make this book very hard to understand. I’m not a big fan of social science books, especially books like this one which doesn’t have a lot of examples to back up the theories mentioned in the book. Nonetheless, this book presents very insightful and novel framework for analysis of psychic activities, i.e. interaction between ID, ego, and super ego. I also lea...more
The ego and the id describes the structural model that is now common knowledge; the id, ego, and superego. Prior to this, Freud used the topographical model of unconscious, pre-conscious, and conscious. The notion of the unconscious having explanatory power over conscious life is the essence of psychoanalysis. The essay begins with this, and then proceeds to lay out the limitations of the topographical model. The question is how does the unconscious get into the pre-conscious. There must be a ce...more

When I started the book it showed that it will get harder by time and more complicated, till you reach the ' categories that our mind ( the non-transparent one :p ) is divided, the way we are defending our self in the society and the way we are dealing with things inside of our minds, it might be known or clear for everyone, but you will things you thought it's impossible to done to do it.
This is one of his more difficult texts and should be read AFTER Beyond Pleasure Principle. There is nothing particularly difficult but reader must already be very familiar with Freud's topographic modal of the mind.
I'm not sure I got anything particularly interesting from this text...? Perhaps, this is not his best work on the Id?

Not exactly Earth shattering, but this book did fill in a few gaps in my understanding of Freud's view of the world. I'm still pretty skeptical of Freud's work overall, but still consider him to be very important historically, if for no other reason than to figure out how psychology became what it is today.
